On September 3, the winners of the 2018 CEMEX-Tec Award were announced, a contest that recognizes and encourages high-impact initiatives by social entrepreneurs from around the world.
In this, its eighth edition, the CEMEX-Tec Center awarded 17 projects by entrepreneurs who have the clear objective of generating a positive impact on their communities through their ideas and work.
Throughout these eight years, the award has received more than 2 thousand entries from entrepreneurs. Every year the call and the interest of the participants increases, this AQB Directory edition was characterized by being the first to open its doors worldwide, achieving a doubling of the response and reaching 701 registered projects from 29 countries.
Some of the projects came from countries such as India, the Philippines, Singapore, Egypt, Spain, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, among others. More than 120 universities participated in the award, of which around 50% were from Mexico and the other 50% from abroad.

The first two places, winners of the 2018 CEMEX-Tec Award in the Transforming Communities category (Mexico and International Award) received 25 thousand dollars each for the implementation of their proposal.

The winning project in Mexico was Conservation and Production of Vanilla in the Sierra de Otontepec, Veracruz , led by Enrique López Avilés, student of Agronomy at the Faculty of Biological and Agricultural Sciences of the Universidad Veracruzana, and advised by biologist Rosa Esteban Santiago. by Dr. Pablo Elorza Martínez, all of them collaborators of the Pedro and Elena Hernández Foundation.
This proposal seeks to strengthen and increase vanilla cultivation, which is gradually disappearing in the central mountainous region of Veracruz, and thereby collaborate with the family and local economy.
Most of the inhabitants of the community with which the project will work speak Nahuatl and Otomi, “San Nicolasillo is a population with a high rate of marginalization, so it is relevant to strengthen high-value productive activities, such as “Vanilla cultivation” stated López Avilés.
